Dell has officially announced its partnership with Canonical today. Many are not surprised as it was announced a while back that Dells CEO was running Ubuntu 7.04 on his suped up laptop. Dell will most likely now be putting Ubuntu on select desktops and laptops being the first major manufacturer to sell GNU/Linux on something other then a server.
I find it interesting when some attack the idea that Dell is guna sell GNU/Linux on its computers. I have seen some belittle it and say it doesn’t matter. But look at it cause it does. This isn’t like Lenovo who only has flirted with the idea of selling GNU/Linux laptops Dell has now reached the point of no return. This will be one of the big things that will probably make or break Dell 2.0 and I am guna go out on a limb and say it most likely will be the savior for Dell.
Now some may wonder as to the reasoning behind this. First, the key fact is Vista is not doing good. Microsoft in attempts to sell Vista have gone so far as to state that they will cut off XP sales by year end even though companies like Dell have been forced by CUSTOMERS to bring back XP. Second, if you are a company selling computers do you want to put a graphics card in every computer you make? Do you want to have to install a gig of ram? I would guess no and I would also guess nobody wants to be forced to spend the money to buy a laptop with those hence the lower specs needed to run GNU/Linux make it ideal for a company like Dell. Finally, is the CUSTOMER. Guess what the customer rules these days and I think the customer is guna see the price tags of things like Vista and office and gawk. Then they will look at the hardware and wonder how they can afford that. Price is the most important thing and many people seem to forget that.
